New Activated Consolidated Rental Car Facility in San Diego

January 28, 2016

SEATTLE, WA – Conrac Solutions’ involvement in the new $316 million San Diego International Airport Consolidated Rental Car facility provided a successful opening to the public, Jan. 20, 2016.

Conrac Solutions began providing input to the design and construction phase of the project in 2013. With capacity to house up to 19 rental car brands and room for over 5,000 vehicle rentals, the rental car facility project benefited early in the process from Conrac Solutions’ participation and valuable input regarding operations and management, safety considerations and reduction in operational expenses. In addition to the startup activities, Conrac Solutions provided input in all major building operational systems including fueling, car washes, oil, conveyance, traffic flow, spatial orientation, security, waste management and signage.

“Project delivery of a consolidated rental car facility is a unique and complex endeavor. Decisions made in the developmental design and construction phases have significant impact on the operations of the facility including the capability of building functions as well as life cycle costs,” says Matt Fairbanks, president of Conrac Solutions. “Early input from the perspective of the day-to-day building operator has a positive impact on future performance of the building and systems over the life of the facility.”

The complex new facility consists of four levels, housing two customer service lobbies and space for a 300-person-occupancy restaurant. More than 325 tons of structural steel were used in constructing the 2,063,714-square-foot facility that sits on the north side of San Diego International Airport’s airfield. Approximately 100,000 cubic yards of concrete were poured by more than 11,000 concrete trucks in the construction of the facility.

All rental car customers will be carried to and from the terminals in 16 new alternative-fuel shuttles owned and operated by the Airport Authority. This fleet replaces the approximately 81 shuttles now operated by the rental car companies.

“The new Rental Car Center is the latest example of our commitment to optimizing the passenger experience at San Diego International Airport,” said San Diego County Regional Airport Authority Board Chair Robert Gleason. “This facility also provides environmental benefits to the community while strengthening the airport’s role as an economic engine for the entire region.”

The building, which is a candidate to receive LEED® Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, also features three new works of public art, with a fourth expected to debut later this year.

The facility generated approximately 4,600 construction jobs, with $186 million in construction contracts going to local businesses, of that $70.4 million went to small businesses.
