Seattle, WA – More than 16 different facility management programs at universities across the United States were invited to participate in Brigham Young University’s first facility management student competition sponsored by Conrac Solutions and hosted by the BYU Construction and Facility Management Program.“We were excited to work with Brigham Young University to support this event. It provided students the chance to participate in real-world, practical application of knowledge learned in coursework, and encouraged leadership and teamwork. I see it as a valuable investment into the future generations of facility management leaders,” says Anthony Criddle, BYU’s Facility and Property Management Advisory Council member and Conrac Solutions’ vice president, operations.
A total of four teams entered this year’s inaugural competition. The winning team was determined by a panel of industry experts including Conrac Solutions’ Senior Operations Manager, Jolene Culler, and SeaTac Facility Manager, Eddie Nielsen, in addition to Director of Real Estate and Facilities at Knight Transportation, Glen Thomas, and Facilities Manager at the Triad Center Facility Management Group, Ryan Bateman.
Each team received a prompt designed to challenge students in facility operations knowledge, time management, organizational abilities and presentation skills. Students used skills and knowledge in building systems/infrastructure, preventative maintenance and cost scrutiny to present a comprehensive analysis regarding preventative maintenance for car wash facilities as part of a consolidated rental car facility. Students presented their findings using a remote-meeting platform for presentations to judges.
The first place winner received $1,000, which was divided equally between all winning team participants. Two additional $500 cash prizes were awarded to the next highest scoring teams.
BYU’s Facility Management Program is one of only several in the country accredited by the International Facility Management Association. The program seeks to be a world leader in facility management education, physical asset management and facility research.
